RoxEdge Bullmastiffs was founded in 1997 by Cheryl and Darryl Randolph, of Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. The Randolph's love of Bullmastiffs began with the purchase of Hanna from Karisoke Bullmastiffs. They initially acquired Hanna as a pet only. However, Hanna proved to be just a little bit more. As she grew, she developed into a lovely show prospect and with encouragement and support from her breeder, Hanna quickly attained her Canadian Championship. Hanna was just the beginning of a long term love affair with Bullmastiffs, and was a wonderful example of the truly versatile nature of this breed. Among her many talents, Hanna excelled as an agility dog. Hanna lived for this sport and many times out performed the "shoe-in" breeds in her trial runs. Hanna is no longer alive, but her memory and legacy live on in the Bullmastiffs the Randolphs share their lives with today.
The Randolph's love for dogs did not start with Bullmastiffs, however. They have been involved in GSD's and Rottweilers over the past 25 years. This involvement allowed them to explore many aspects of the world of pure bred dogs, such as importing from overseas to impact and expand certain lines, breeding, training, schutzhund, obedience, agility and of course, rescue, earning them along the way a respected position in the dog community. Although they are no longer directly involved with these particular breeds, Cheryl and Darryl always make themselves available to share their knowledge with those fanciers who seek it. Cheryl has also been heavily involved in the horse world . . .training, teaching and more recently, judging hunters and jumpers. Cheryl is a member of the Bullmastiff Fanciers of Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club, the Sooke All Breed Obedience Club and she currently holds the position of Rescue Coordinator for Vancouver Island with Bullmastiff Rescue of Canada. She attends countless dog shows each year, and also takes in a variety of classes such as Obedience and Agility. You will often see her daughter Lindsey by her side, learning the ropes and following ever so diligently in her mother's footsteps. Lindsey's adventures in dogdom began with the purchase of the ever-sweet and devilish Schipperke, Raven. The birth of Raven's litter brought Simon into the world. Together Lindsey and Simon are working towards a Canadian Championship and the pair are often seen accepting ribbons in the Junior Handling ring as well. The Randolph's philosophy regarding their dogs is centred around a loving family environment . . . where the dogs are fully integrated as rightful members of their household. The goal at RoxEdge is to breed sound, healthy TYPEY Bullmastiffs . . . in essence, functional in every aspect of the written breed standard. They use OFA and PennHIP to screen hips and elbows. They test thyroid and heart function and all their dogs MUST pass rigorous screening well before they are even considered for breeding. Of course, one of the most important factors in the RoxEdge breeding program is producing puppies with a sound, happy temperament capable of adapting to any situation. An important part of maintaining the quality of the dogs produced at RoxEdge is regular participation in conformation shows, where they excel. RoxEdge dogs are also involved in obedience and agility. At RoxEdge, the quantity of puppies produced is NOT as important as the QUALITY of the puppies. They breed selectively and only when necessary to enhance their breeding program. Their priority is not how many champions they can produce in a litter but rather providing extraordinary, loving "FOREVER" homes for the dogs that they do produce. Yes, that means that sometimes even show quality puppies go to pet homes. If you are interested in the Bullmastiff, and are considering acquiring one to integrate into your family, you are seriously urged to research the breed thoroughly before you make any decision. While they ARE the perfect dog for many, Bullmastiffs are not necessarily the breed for everyone . . . no matter how tempting and appealing they may be. They are a guard dog, and as such, one should never forget that fact. They are also not a disposable investment. A dog is for a lifetime, and for Bullmastiffs that usually means anywhere from 8 to 12 years! There are numerous books and resources on the Bullmastiff available via the internet. The "LINKS" page on this site is a good place to further your research. Just as importantly, meet and talk with as many breeders as you can, and make sure that you find a breeder who works for YOU and whose first priority is the welfare of the breed. This is an ethical breeder who employs good breeding practices. If you are not sure what this means, please refer to the Bullmastiff Fanciers of Canada and Canadian Kennel Club websites for more information on what constitutes a good and ethical breeder. Please do not rush into any decision to purchase a puppy, but meet it fully informed and prepared to ask a breeder as many questions as they will most certainly ask you. In
the meantime, the RoxEdge gang invite you to browse this website at your
leisure, meet their dogs and enjoy all the photos and information you
will find here. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
them at any time. |
